What is Instagram?
A few readers have asked me to help them get started on Instagram. Even though I have been posting on my own Instagram accounts and those of my parish clients for a few years, I am still pretty much of a beginner myself. When I think about it, my minimal use of Instagram probably has a lot to do with the fact that Instagram is a mobile platform and I am much more comfortable using a computer to create and post content.
Don’t get me wrong. I use my Smart Phone quite a bit— to get information, directions, recipes, reviews, check my emails, etc., but I do not use it to create or post content. As I mentioned in my previous blog, it is now easier to create Instagram content on the computer and then use apps to post it on Instagram.
However, I am resolved to explore how to become more effective using Instagram as a mobile platform and I will be sharing my discoveries with you as I go along.
Instagram is a free social media app (mobile platform) for sharing photos. Over time other features have been added. The 5 minute video below gives you a simple timeline of how Instagram began, how it has evolved and where it is today.
Similar to Facebook, you set up an Instagram profile to which you can add your business (ministry) account (s).
If you are looking on YouTube for how- to videos on Instagram (there are many), try to get videos created in 2020. Instagram is updating constantly and you want the most current information.
The video below is from the YouTube Channel HowFinity. It has over 170 videos just on Instagram!!!!! We will look at a few them. Here is the latest one on Getting Started on Instagram. It is a lot to take in, but it is the simplest one I could find on the topic. Check it out. Don’t be overwhelmed–just absorb what you can. If you don’t have an Instagram account, try to set one up.
Let me know if I am on the right track to help you with Instagram. Always happy to hear from you.

Sr. Susan –
Thanks for continually helping us all evangelizing digitally. Sharing your wisdom and ideas is appreciated by many who may not comment to let you know!
I meant to share this on your last post and forgot, so let me add here that you CAN post from a computer to Instagram, even though it is primarily a mobile tool. I add photos from my office PC most often.
